March 16, 2020
Friends,
Today the President urged everyone to suspend meetings of groups of ten people or more. This new announcement impacts many groups and activities in our congregations. Face-to-Face meetings in our church buildings of Bible Studies, Twelve Step Groups, Knitting Circles, Book Clubs and the like should be suspended for the same period as the already published suspension of worship services. For now, the group-meeting suspension extends through March 29 just like the suspension of worship services. In the meantime I will assess the unfolding situation and decide whether or not to extend the suspensions. My decision will reach you a few days prior to March 29.
Some of these groups will be able to take advantage of electronic meeting platforms like Zoom. If your congregation uses this application or something similar, please help your groups gain access to it and learn how to use it. Encourage groups to find alternative ways to maintain connection and enjoy mutual support. My staff regularly uses Zoom and can provide information about it.
Many people will feel the loss of such meetings. It grieves me to ask so much of the good people our Diocese. But I am also heartened and sustained by the many expressions of determination, courage, and good cheer as people pull together to face our common challenge. Christ’s presence has been especially powerful for me in these past few days. And I pray that this may be true for you as well.
Keep praying, my friends. Reach out to each other for wisdom and support. We are a loving and beloved community. Even in the midst of adversity we are blessed.
Faithfully,
+Jake
