Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day

Happy Labor Day Weekend! Some of the most beautiful  prayers in The Book of Common Prayer are about labor, vocation, and our dependence on one another.

For example:

The Collect for Labor Day, BCP 261

Almighty God, you have so linked our lives one with another that all we do affects, for good or ill, all other lives: So guide us in the work we do, that we may do it not for self alone, but for the common good; and, as we seek a proper return for our own labor, make us mindful of the rightful aspirations of other workers, and arouse our concern for those who are out of work; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

And this one from An Order for Compline, BCP 134 (bed-time prayers):

O God, your unfailing providence sustains the world we live in and the life we live: Watch over those, both night and day, who work while others sleep, and grant that we may never forget that our common life depends upon each other's toil; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Work becomes “vocation” when it is done with a sense of higher purpose. Work isn’t simply toil when it is done from the heart - when it is done with love. We call such meaningful work “a labor of love.” A job done with love becomes a vocation, and a true labor of love!

Ascension Day Holy Eucharist

Ascension Day

Today is Ascension Day. We remember that the risen Christ is taken into heaven after appearing to his followers for forty days (Acts 1:1-11, Mk 16:19). The Ascension marks the conclusion of Jesus' post-resurrection appearances. It is the final elevation of his human nature to divine glory and the near presence of God.

Join us tonight for

Ascension Day Holy Eucharist
Thursday, 5:30 p.m.

The Collect:

Almighty God, whose blessed Son our Savior Jesus Christ ascended far above all heavens that he might fill all things: Mercifully give us faith to perceive that, according to his promise, he abides with his Church on earth, even to the end of the ages; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

Acts 1:1-11

In the first book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus did and taught from the beginning until the day when he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. After his suffering he presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father. “This,” he said, “is what you have heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?” He replied, “It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

Happy Mother's Day!

Christ: The Mother Hen, by Kelly Latimore April 21, 2022. "I have often felt that we don't use the metaphor of Christ as Mother Hen enough. Drawn from Christ's own words in Matthew's gospel, It was about time to paint an icon of it."
Metaphor is the only possible language available to religion because it alone is honest about Mystery. The underlying messages that different religions and denominations use are often in strong agreement, but they use different images to communicate their own experience of union with God." ~Richard Rohr

Sad News

Members and Friends,

I write to share some sad news that I knew you all would want to know - Louise Bradford died this morning. I prayed with her, and anointed her with oil, about an hour before she died.

Details will follow as plans are made.

Rest eternal grant to Louise, O Lord;
And let light perpetual shine upon her.
May her soul, and the souls of all the departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Whit+

Annual Meeting - This Sunday!

The Conversion of Saint Paul the Apostle

Join us today, Wednesday, January 25, at St. Alban's for Holy Eucharist at 12:10 p.m. to celebrate the Conversion of Saint Paul the Apostle.

We will also begin our NEW evening Holy Eucharist at 5:30 p.m. It will be followed by our Bible Project Class in the Conference Room.  This means we will no longer offer Zoom Evening Prayer and Class on Wednesday night.

All are welcome!

The Conversion of Saint Paul the Apostle

The Collect:

O God, by the preaching of your apostle Paul you have caused the light of the Gospel to shine throughout the world: Grant, we pray, that we, having his wonderful conversion in remembrance, may show ourselves thankful to you by following his holy teaching; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

On January 25 we remember how Saul (or Paul) of Tarsus, formerly an enemy and persecutor of the early Christian Church, was led by God's grace to become one of its chief spokesmen. Our chief sources of information about the Apostle Paul are several of his own letters, preserved for us in the New Testament, and  the account of him given by Luke in the book of Acts.

Note: The art used is The Conversion of Saint Paul, a painting by Caravaggio - a leading Italian painter of the late 16th and early 17th centuries who became famous for the intense and unsettling realism of his large-scale religious works. Many depictions of Paul’s conversion feature a horse, a detail not mentioned in the Biblical accounts!
