Our New Banner

St. Alban's new processional banner, pole and base are now complete and on display in the church. Special thanks to Dottie for sewing the banner. Fr. Whit sketched the design for the banner and built the pole and base. The banner was created for use in the procession for the consecration of Jake Owensby as the IV Bishop of Western Louisiana. It will be carried by two members of St. Alban's.

We will bless the completed banner prior to its use on Sunday, July 1, 2012 and after the consecration it will be on regular display in the church.

The blue field with golden yellow cross along with the sword and crown is the official crest of St. Alban's Diocese in England, which is the home of St. Alban's Cathedral. The cathedral is located on the site where Alban was martyred.

A Banner for St. Alban's

When Jake Owensby is consecrated IV Bishop of the Diocese of Western Louisiana on July 21, 2012, the whole church (at least in our part of the kingdom) will be present. Representing each individual church in the procession into St. Mark's Cathedral will be a banner.

But St. Alban's didn't have a banner. Here is a sketch of a new banner that is being made for that occasion.  Dottie is doing the sewing and Fr. Whit is putting the pole and stand together. We will bless the completed banner prior to its use and after the big day - it will be on regular display here at the church.

The blue field with golden yellow cross along with the sword and crown is the official crest of St. Alban's Diocese in England.

St. Alban's Day

What a goof! When preparing June’s calendar for the newsletter, Father Whit left off an important date – especially for the life of our parish – St. Alban’s Day! The Church remembers Alban on June 22.  Alban is noted as “First Martyr of Britain.” If you need a little Alban refresher course, here is his biographical sketch from the Lesser Feasts and Fasts:

Alban is the earliest Christian in Britain who is known by name and, according to tradition, the first British martyr. He was a soldier in the Roman army stationed at Verulamium, a city about twenty miles northeast of London, now called St. Alban’s. He gave shelter to a Christian priest who was fleeing from persecution, and was converted by him. When officers came to Alban’s house, he dressed himself in the garments of the priest and gave himself up. Alban was tortured and martyred in place of the priest, on the hilltop where the Cathedral of St. Alban’s now stands. The traditional date of his martyrdom is 303 or 304, but recent studies suggest that the year was actually 209, during the persecution under the Emperor Septimius Severus.

The site of Alban’s martyrdom soon became a shrine. King Offa of Mercia established a monastery, there about the year 793, and in the high Middle Ages St. Alban’s ranked as the premier Abbey in England. The great Norman abbey church, begun in 1077, now serves as the cathedral of the diocese of St. Alban’s, established in 1877. It is the second longest church in England (Winchester Cathedral is the longest, by six feet), and it is built on higher ground than any other English cathedral. In a chapel east of the choir and high Altar, there are remains of the fourteenth century marble shrine of St. Alban.

The Venerable Bede gives this account of Alban’s trial: “When Alban was brought in, the judge happened to be standing before an altar, offering sacrifice to devils . . . ‘What is your family and race?’ demanded the judge. ‘How does my family concern you?’ replied Alban; ‘If you wish to know the truth about my religion, know that I am a Christian and am ready to do a Christian’s duty.’ ‘I demand to know your name,’ insisted the judge. ‘Tell me at once.’ ‘My parents named me Alban,’ he answered, ‘and I worship and adore the living and true God, who created all things.’ ”

The Collect for Alban:
Almighty God, by whose grace and power your holy martyr Alban triumphed over suffering and was faithful even to death: Grant us, who now remember him in thanksgiving, to be so faithful in our witness to you in this world, that we may receive with him the crown of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Readings for the Day:
Psalm 34:1-8 or 31:1-5
Lessons: 1 John 3:13-16, Matthew 10:34-42

We will remember St. Alban’s at our Wednesday Eucharist on Wednesday, June 20 at 5:30 p.m. Join us!

Primary Camp 2012

Fr. Whit just got back from a great week at Camp Hardtner. This year, he served as the Dean of Primary Camp. Primary Camp is for entering 4th and 5th Graders.

The theme for Primary Camp was "I'm a Believer - a Journey with Shrek."  There were lots of kids there from Monroe and a big group from St. Alban's. Serving on the permanent (college-age) staff are George Flynn and Will Phelps. Serving with Fr. Whit on the Camp Staff was Zonnie Patterson Back - who grew up at St.. Alban's. Campers included Helen J., Hanna Grace P. and William A.  The Bishop visited and celebrated Holy Eucharist too!

More young people from St. Alban's will attend later sessions. Hardtner has shaped the lives of many people in this diocese and many of the clergy.

For more information about Camp - just ask Fr. Whit or visit www.camphardtner.org.

A Prayer for Father's Day

Sunday, June 17, 2012 is Father's Day. Let us remember our fathers and all fathers on that day in our prayers.

God our Father, in your wisdom and love you made all things. Bless those fathers who have taken upon themselves, the responsibility of parenting. Bless those who have lost a spouse to death ... or divorce who are parenting their children alone. Strengthen them by your love that they may be and become the loving, caring persons they are meant to be. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen

Canon Larry Wilkes died suddenly this past Monday while working in his yard. Wilkes was the former Canon to the Ordinary, a nominee in our recent election for the 4th Bishop of Western Louisiana, and up until his death, the Rector at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, New Iberia.

The Mass of the Resurrection will be held at Epiphany Parish, New Iberia on Saturday, June 2, 2012. There will be visitation in the parish hall beginning at 12:30 p.m. through the start of the service at 1:30 p.m. Bishop MacPherson will preach and celebrate. A reception will follow in the parish hall.

Please pray for the repose of Larry's soul, and God's care and love for his wife, Debbie, and the entire family.

"Rest eternal grant to him, O Lord; And let light perpetual shine upon him.
May his soul, and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen."
