This Sunday, November 3, St. Alban’s will celebrate All Saints’ Day. All Saints’ falls on November 1 each year (the evening before is All Hallow’s Eve or Halloween!) All Saints’ Day is one of the rare days on the Church’s calendar that can be transferred to the next Sunday.
One of the hymns that we will sing this Sunday is “For all the saints,” A friend of mine posted this interesting tidbit from The Hymnal 1982 Companion.
Hymn 287, “For all the saints,” Music: Sine Nomine
There is probably no question that this tune, written by Ralph Vaughan Williams for use with this text, stands as one of the finest hymn tunes produced in this century. It was included with this name with three other tunes by Vaughn Williams in the English Hymnal, which he edited. Sine Nomine, which means "without a name", may be a reference to the many saints whose names are known only to God.
Join us this Sunday as we give thanks for all the saints…
