September 11

Twenty Five Years Ago - September 11

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”  Matthew 5:1-10

Labor Day 2026

Happy Labor Day and Labor Day Weekend! Some of the most beautiful  prayers in The Book of Common Prayer are about labor, vocation, and our dependence on one another.

For example:

The Collect for Labor Day, BCP 261

Almighty God, you have so linked our lives one with another that all we do affects, for good or ill, all other lives: So guide us in the work we do, that we may do it not for self alone, but for the common good; and, as we seek a proper return for our own labor, make us mindful of the rightful aspirations of other workers, and arouse our concern for those who are out of work; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

And this one from An Order for Compline, BCP 134 (bed-time prayers):

O God, your unfailing providence sustains the world we live in and the life we live: Watch over those, both night and day, who work while others sleep, and grant that we may never forget that our common life depends upon each other's toil; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Fourth of July

The New Colossus

The 1903 bronze plaque located in the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty.

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,

With conquering limbs astride from land to land;

Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand

A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame

Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name

Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand

Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command

The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she

With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Emma Lazarus

November 2, 1883

Fourth of July

Because The Book of Common Prayer is the uniquely American version in the Anglican tradition of “Common” prayer books, it has prayers for special days in our national life. Here is the prayer book’s prayer for Independence Day.

Independence Day, July 4, The Book of Common Prayer, page 242.

Lord God Almighty, in whose Name the founders of this
country won liberty for themselves and for us, and lit the
torch of freedom for nations then unborn: Grant that we and
all the people of this land may have grace to maintain our
liberties in righteousness and peace; through Jesus Christ our
Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one
God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Have a safe and happy Fourth of July!

Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day

On this Memorial Day, we pray “The Prayer for Heroic Service” from The Book of Common Prayer, page 839, No. 6:

O Judge of the nations, we remember before you with grateful hearts the men and women of our country who in the day of decision ventured much for the liberties we now enjoy. Grant that we may not rest until all the people of this land share the benefits of true freedom and gladly accept its disciplines. This we ask in the Name of Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Have a safe Memorial Day,  and remember to give thanks for those who served by giving their lives for others.

We hope to see you in church this Sunday for The Day of Pentecost - remember to wear red!

From Bishop Jake - Updated

April 24, 2026

Dear Friends,

In this past week there have been two unspeakable tragedies, both involving acts of homicidal gun violence.

On Sunday, a man shot and killed eight children and wounded two women in Shreveport. Seven of those children were his own. Thursday, in the food court of a Baton Rouge mall, two groups opened fire on each other. Six innocent bystanders were caught in the crossfire. Among them were three Ascension High School students. Two were wounded. Another, Martha Odom, died from her injuries.

Bishop Shannon Rogers Duckworth of Louisiana and I have issued a joint statement for both of our dioceses. That message has been shared separately. Here I want to offer to you my own pastoral response.

No words can adequately express our horror and heartache. The consolations of our faith do not erase or compensate for our grief. Jesus himself wept at the tomb of his friend Lazarus. And yet our faith does provide solace and hope.

Our solace comes from the Spirit’s abiding presence both in our hearts and in our loving communities. We can feel God’s love within our own souls and also in the hugs, the hymns, and the casseroles of those who grieve along with us.

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the source of our hope. In him we have the promise of everlasting life. A life beyond tears and pain and regret. But our hope is more than heavenly expectation. It is also the power of love animating our lives each and every day. A love that moves us to shape a better world for all of God’s beloved children.

Today, and in the days ahead, we will grieve these precious children of God. We pray that our loving God receives them into the arms of his mercy and into the joy of his eternal light.

We pray for those who mourn; for those who fear for their children; for families enduring violence and abuse; for those weighed down by despair. And we pray for the wisdom and the strength and the courage to work with God’s grace to heal this shattered, aching world. To be instruments of peace and justice and love.

May God bless you and keep you and hold you always in the palm of his hand.

Peace in the risen Christ,

+Jake
